Winter and the holiday season brings forth the arrival of eggnog. While many are familiar with drinking cold eggnog with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg, it actually has a rich tradition as an alcoholic beverage. Because of that, I’m going to take the classic White Russian and add a twist to it by making an eggnog white Russian.
Quick Navigation
What is Eggnog?
Eggnog, or egg-nog, is a very rich drink made up of milk, cream, sugar, and eggs. In its conception and history, eggnog was an alcoholic drink often being mixed into a punch with brandy or bourbon.
My Approach to an Eggnog White Russian
Even though I’m slightly lactose intolerant, I love both eggnog and white Russians. I thought it would be fun to combine the two to create a decadent drink.
The holiday variant I am preparing today swaps the heavy cream out for eggnog. After all, what cream is heavier than eggnog? So really, this is like taking a very rich cocktail and making it even richer.
Flavorful Additions
As I am getting pretty heavy into dessert territory with the eggnog version of this drink, I think it is more than reasonable to think about whipped cream and spices on this drink.
In my preparation, I’ll be keeping with the holiday colors and using raspberries and mint to garnish my drink. The mint gives you some wonderful aromatics with each sip, and the bright acidity of the raspberries will help with the thick mouthfeel of this drink.
What Pairs with Eggnog White Russians?
Just like with my normal White Russian pairings, anything that you’d eat with ice cream should pair very well with this drink. To capitalize on the spice notes, I’d recommend pairing it with pumpkin pie or an apple crisp.
